Guyana, Mexico game moved to America

The Dynamo in Houston- will host Guyana’s originally scheduled home game of the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers against Mexico on October 12, the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) confirmed yesterday via its website.

The match was originally billed as Guyana’s last home game in this round of the Qualifiers at the National Stadium, Providence. The switch means that the Golden Jaguars’ final two games will be played away from home, as they are set to take on hosts Costa Rica in San Jose on October 16.

While reasons for the change in venue have not been forthcoming from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), this latest development is certainly a major disappointment for local fans, as many were hoping to see the likes of Premier League striker Javier Hernandez and others in action on local soil.

After four matches each in Group B, the Mexicans are in the lead on 12 points, followed by El Salvador on five; Costa Rica on four, and Guyana on a solitary point. Only two teams from the group will qualify for the final six-team or ‘hexagonal’ round.
