As the 2013 edition of the Carib Soca Monarch Competition draws closer, Lindener Anthony Abrams, better known as “Chiney Man”, is optimistic that he will win the title after placing second in this year’s contest.
Within the past year, he has won the hearts of fans, young and old, from across Guyana with his energetic and unpredictable performances. However, there is much more to the thoughtful young singer, who graduated last November with a diploma in computer science from the Linden Technical Institute and planned on furthering his studies. He believes that his performance at the 2013 competition will be the biggest of his life and intends to give it his all, as he is cognisant the competition will be very competitive. Abrams noted that Guyana has many unknown talents and each contestant will be pulling in 110 per cent, so he is not taking anyone for granted.
When asked if he is more prepared for the 2013 sing-off than 2012’s, he said: “Of course I am, been rehearsing long hours each day; experienced performing for mixed audiences around Guyana, Barbados and pretty soon, other Caribbean islands, Canada, and the UK. These experiences have helped me build my confidence and character which will boost my chances.”
Abrams’ most recent release, a new music video “Chappin Grass” reflects that burgeoning confidence and left fans wanting more. The track is typical of a fairly new genre called Boom Drop, a fusion of traditional soca, techno, dancehall, and Latin music. The video was posted on Facebook, YouTube, and was officially launched on the LIVEWIRE entertainment programme on Channel 13 Linden last Saturday.
Apart from preparing for the 2013 Carib Soca Monarch Competition, Abrams said: “In a few weeks, me and management team, Divine Entertainment will be releasing a new video for “Na No Dangle”, a song that encourages women to be independent; also a remix to “Whine Attack” featuring Peter Ram, dancehall “Rev It Out” featuring Peter Ram and Biggie Irie, various ‘colabs’ with Linden stars Genesiz, Alkofi and upcoming producer J-Lyrics, not forgetting most importantly, my entry for Carib Soca Monarch 2013.” All in all, Abrams is headed for an exciting 2013.
