Meet Selector ‘Diamond’

Clifford Alvin Leslie also called “Selector Diamond” creates a whirlwind at almost every event Fusion Sound System is a part of. With his unique style; maturity and excellent mixture of music, he sets the mood for a fabulous night.

22 year old Diamond was born to Sylvia Messiah and Clinton Leslie who are now deceased. He is the youngest sibling of three with Adele Leslie being the eldest followed by Rickford Leslie.

He attended the Holy Family Nursery, Durban Street after which he attended the St Sidwell’s Primary School and St Mary’s Secondary School. This talented young man had a childhood filled with fun and music. He was surrounded by sounds emanating from large music boxes which were controlled by his brother Rickford. His parents often spent time dancing and listening to oldies, so music was a perfect fit for his career.

Diamond said he was discovered after recording a promotional compact disc (CD) with his friend at his residence.

Whilst doing such, he noted that DJ Ceon La Rose aka ‘Gully Ras’ made inquiries about who he was and eventually offered him a place with the Fusion Sound Company. There was where his career evolved.

Selector Diamond says he feels most comfortable while on stage, since he is in his comfort zone and always allows the music to do the ‘talking’, while adding that it lets the people (audience) enjoy his selections of music to the fullest.

His inspiration, he said, “I have never given that much thought, however, I do believe I was born to do this; therefore I guess God for want of an answer”

Futuristically, he said he hopes to have a son and a wife to join him and his daughter but more professionally he would like to own his own sound system.

The young father said that being a lover of music helped him to realize after having his daughter that nothing can surpass how he feels about her.

“It’s difficult however, having to move about to various parts of the country, and not having her around me as much. However I try to put all systems in place to spend available time with her. It is a challenge and will always be, but it’s important to remember priority which is my daughter”, he said.

In his leisure time, he rests a lot; creates juggling styles; burns CDs for friends/persons who make requests and loves to watch wrestling; loves to make people laugh and playing pranks. His favorite foods are metemgee and fried rice while his favorite colours are black and blue.

His advice to young people who would want to be a selector is to be versatile and more so to ensure not to pay attention to just one category of people. Stay focused and work assiduously to propel you to the top, he added.
