Almost three years after its release by VP Records, Gyptian’s hit song Hold Yuh has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of 500,000 downloads.
Produced by Ricky Blaze, Hold Yuh made several Billboard magazine American charts. That success spilled over to Europe where it was also a sizable hit.
Hold Yuh earned Gyptian a MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) Award for Best Reggae Act as well as a Soul Train Music Award for Best Reggae Artiste.
The singer’s album of the same also released by VP Records in 2010, failed to match the single’s success.
Hold Yuh is the first song by a Jamaican reggae artiste to sell gold or platinum since Damian Marley’s Welcome to Jamrock eight years ago.
To date, that single has sold 541,000 copies. It also won a Grammy at the 48th annual Grammy Awards for Best Urban/Alternative Performance.
The other Jamaican dancehall/reggae act who has sold gold in the last 10 years is Sean Paul whose We Be Burnin, Give It Up To Me, Break It Off and Temperature each sold over 500,000 copies.
