Tessanne Chin is still on cloud nine following the broadcast of her audition for the televised talent show, The Voice, on American network NBC on Tuesday.
Speaking to the Jamaica Observer, Chin described watching her pre-recorded performance as surreal.
“I was at a family friend’s house and in true Jamaican style we celebrated with food. I relived every single emotion… It was a moving experience. I am super-happy with all the love and support I am getting from my Jamaicans and Caribbean people,” she said.
On Tuesday, Chin, who gained prominence locally for her hit song Hideaway, mesmerised her audience performing Pink’s Try.
“I chose the song because it was all about me getting up and trying again. It is such a strong message and, of course, Pink is such a great vocalist.”
She indicated her television audience might not have a chance to hear Hideaway as the journey through The Voice is about reinventing herself and presenting music for a wider, global audience.
As for her decision to work with coach Adam Levine, Chin drew parallels with her own musical style and that of the Maroon 5 front man.
“Adam is a musical chameleon. You hear pop, rock and different elements and genres in him and I like that. I hate being put into a box. I believe one should be free.”
She said Christina Aguillera was also “tugging at her heart strings” as she battled to arrive at a decision on the choice of a coach.
“Who doesn’t love Christina Aguillera? She is such a great artiste and I have to give her props,” Chin said.
During the broadcast, cameras cut away to catch reactions from Chin’s father, Richard, as well as her husband, Michael Anthony Cuffe Jr. It was the responses of her father which she found most heart-warming.
“I have to say daddy. He was there from my very first note and to see him react. It was so raw.”
Chin’s father yelled in his thick local accent: “Show dem baby” when her performance got the attention of all four celebrity judges and tearfully uttered “Mi likkle baby” as she exited the stage.
She is not resting on her laurels and is looking forward to future performances on the show, mindful of her competition. There are two more weeks of auditions before the elimination rounds begin.
“There are quite a few contestants who stand out, are skilled and talented.”
She named soul singer Donna Allen, Barry Black, and Holly Henry as standouts.
“I have to give them props and I’m so proud of them.”
