Tessanne Chin inched closer to the December 16 finals of the NBC talent show The Voice, when she was named one of the top 12 finalists last night.
The Hideaway singer was visibly nervous as she awaited the results from host Carson Daly at the end of the one-hour show broadcast live from Universal Studios in Los Angeles, California.
Under the rules of the show each team is allowed three members in the top 12 — two chosen by the voting public and the final member selected by the team’s coach.
For team Adam, following a performance of Safe And Sound, it came down to the nail-biting decision.
The team member with the highest votes was James Wolpert. Then it was the powerhouse Jamaican whom the voting public chose to be the second member of that team.
Chin looked relieved once her name was called, burying her face in her hands before hugging her fellow team members.
The team was rounded out by Will Champlin, who was saved by coach Adam Levine.
Preston Pohl and Grey were the other members of team Adam who failed to advance.
In his comments last night regarding Chin’s performance of Jimmy Cliff’s Many Rivers To Cross on Monday night’s live show, Levine called her “a very rare gift”.
“She has the ability to sing any song with potency and talent,” he added.
Chin noted the significance of performing this particular song.
“A few years ago I was singing this song as a back-up singer and now I am performing centrestage,” she said.
Chin toured with the reggae icon for three years as a backing vocalist before embarking on a solo career.
