Plans are apace for the staging of the annual Linden Town Week which is geared at showcases the history, culture, and achievements of Lindeners while attracting domestic and international tourists each year.
However, it loks like reigning Town day queen Latisha Phillips will have to hold on to the title for a second year. So far there will not be a pageant this year but on the upside a regatta has been added to the programme.
No explanation has been given for the decision for not having the pageant which is normally staged as a major part of the even has not been announced.
The Linden Town Week of activities will officially commence with an opening ceremony on April 27 at the Linden-Georgetown minibus park, Mackenzie according to sources on the planning Committee. The events will culminate on May 4. Listed among the events aside from parties is a mega gospel concert on April 28. The seniors would be celebrated with a luncheon on April 29 at the Egbert Benjamin Hall and Conference Centre, Mackenzie. Debates, spelling bee and scrabble competitions are also carded for that day for students.
The Wismar Creole night will be held along Burnham Drive and Poker Street, on Friday, May 2 while on May 3, an art exhibition is to be held at the Egbert Benjamin Hall and Conference Centre and this would be followed by the farmers’ exhibition and job fair.
The Linden Town Day Committee has formed a new regatta committee master Winston Miller Senior given his experience in this sport since 1987 has been invited to a special meeting with the committee where discussions were held to host a successful regatta.
According to Master Miller he has been tasked with the responsibility of coordinating the power boat and Jet Ski races and he says he has “already contacted the Pomeroon racers.”
According to him Bartica, Suriname and Skeldon racers are all excited about the Linden regatta which would be held on May 4 at the bandstand by the old Aluminum Plant Demerara River. The events are listed for the event includes three Open races, three 75 – 90 horse powered engines races, three 40 HP engines races and three Jet ski races. There will also be a Swimming race and a Paddle boat race
Master Miller assures that there will be strict supervision by MARAD and the Power Boat Racing Association and police. “A good day of racing awaits spectators, and I do hope this will become an annual event for Lindeners.”
