Kevin Smith for Mr Guyana International 2014

Born under the zodiac sign of Scorpio (November 9, 1995) bringing joy and happiness to loving and caring parents Shamain Smith and Kevin Cross is this young, vibrant, shining star Kevin Smith.

Smith, a present employee of the Guyana Revenue Authority was born and raised in West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

His parents instilled in him the values of love, unity and respect for all individuals which contributed to his amazing persona.

He started his education at the South Road Nursery School and moved on to his primary education at Smith’s Memorial Primary where he spent six unforgettable years and met a lot of interesting individuals. Being a lover of sport and reading, he was a part of his school’s Spelling Bee team and was one of his school’s best athletes.

As time waits for no one, it was then time for his departure from the primary school he so loved. He wrote the National Grade Six Assessment and gained a place at St John’s College. It was no different there since his intelligence was recognised and he was a part of his school’s debating team.

The thrill he got from participating in numerous debating competitions boosted his confidence and aspiration of becoming a lawyer.

In the year 2012, he wrote seven subjects at the CSEC examination and he obtained six passes. In 2013, he wrote an additional three subjects and recently, in June 2014, he wrote another. He believes that “Education is a beacon of light in the darkness of ignorance” and as such, continuously tries to improve himself.

Further, in 2013 he joined the Guyana Red Cross Society Youth Group where he volunteers part-time. It also brings him great joy to volunteer at the Children Convalescence Home (C.C.H) every Sunday. Additionally, he recently completed the Bronze Presidential Youth Award programme.

Kevin is actively involved in drama, dancing, poetry, street football and basketball. He also enjoys social media, reading, and meeting people of interest. His role model is none other than Guyanese lawyer James Bond. He is exceedingly impressed with Bond’s persona and love for his work.

Pageantry is nothing new to Smith since he was a part of Mr Guyana Talented Teen 2013 pageant. This experience, he said, gave him the confidence to step up to this challenge – competing for the Mr Guyana International title.

Smith seeks fulfilment in everything that he does. As such, he joined this pageant with the hope that at the end of the day, he would find satisfaction in accomplishing something new.

Smith believes that he is destined for great things and that he has an awesome future ahead of him. This shining star has chosen “Male Underachievement” as his platform for this competition because he strongly believes that males are underachievers because they are shortcut seekers, never wanting to go the distance in order to achieve greatness. It has been rightly said that “the roots of education are bitter, but the fruits are sweet”.
Sadly, not many of the young men in our society today understand this simple statement. Kevin lives by the motto: “Dream the impossible, achieve the unattainable and face the future with courage”.
