Shaggy blames musical absence on management

Shaggy is again making the rounds online after another overseas interview. This time, the Boombastic singer is giving reasons behind his decade-long absence from the music scene.

On Wednesday, the singer made an appearance on British Television programme, ‘This Morning’. he made claims that issues relating to his management and record label led to his musical decline over the last few years.

“I had some management issues and some label issues. People go through different things in their career. Things weren’t working out on the management side and things weren’t working out on the label side either after those big, massive hits,” he explained, making reference to the hit singles that brought him fame.

Shaggy carried on, stating that his ‘creative freedom’ was taken away from him by management as soon as he released the ‘big massive hits’.

“You might be like, ‘I want really big hits.’ But when you get really big hits, and your label is making US$150 million, there are people who are now interested in what you do. They are going to begin to tell you what to do, and so you become important.”

His last number-one single, Angel, was released in 2001, but Shaggy believes he is back in top form, as he now has the right team behind him. However, he admitted that success is dependent on a great song.

“There’s a certain things that never change, the song, the song, the song,” he said. “It boils down to having a great record.”

Shaggy’s latest single, I Need Your Love, was released last year and has since received more than 54 million views on YouTube
