10 contestants for Miss World Guyana

Ten young ladies were recently revealed by the Miss Guyana World committee as perspective hopefuls to succeed reigning Miss Guyana World Lisa Punch.

The grand coronation is billed for May 27, exactly 50 years since the first Miss World Guyana contest was held.

The 10 finalists are Divya Yabindranauth –Miss Region One; Najuma Nelson – Miss Region Two; Marva Langevine – Miss Region Three; Ariella Basdeo – Miss Region Four; Ashmini Ramnauth – Miss Region Five; Marleena Ramdass-Miss – Region Six; Treasure James – Miss Region Seven; Nurriyah Gerrard – Miss Region Eight; Damallie Jackman – Miss Region Nine and Tiffany Bobb-Semple – Miss Region 10.

The women were required to apply by submitting videos, attending live interviews and filling out an extensive online application. The Miss World Guyana Organisation received 40 applications from which the finalists were selected via a thorough process by external judges.

As is customary, delegates were assigned to different Regions of Guyana which they are expected to fully represent throughout the competition. The Miss World Guyana 2016 contestants had to possess “Super G” qualities: Generous, Genial, Good, Gregarious, Golden, Guyanese, Global, Gifted, and Graceful.

The finalists will be competing in several segments including Sports and Fitness, Talent, Interview, Top Model, multimedia competition, and Beauty with a Purpose. These preliminary competitions commence from May 8 leading up to the grand coronation on May 27.

The Miss World Guyana 2016 Pageant is a platform to enable personal and professional growth among finalists in addition to the promotion of community service, beauty, fitness and talent.

Participation in the Pageant affords young women the opportunity to raise awareness on issues and causes affecting their communities as they serve as Regional Ambassadors.

The Miss World Guyana Coronation Show is the country’s official preliminary competition to the Miss World pageant, the longest-running and prestigious pageant in the world with over 130 countries participating annually.

The local pageant started in May 1966 and the winner, Umbilita Van Sluytman, who was also known as the Independence Queen, became Guyana’s first entry in the Miss World Pageant, making it to the semi-finals in 1966.

The Miss World Pageant is the first international pageant in which Guyana has achieved repeated successes, with local women gracing the top ten and five. As a result, Guyana is known for having one of the longest consecutive placement history in the Miss World Pageant.
