With soca season in high gear, the compilation album Fox Fuse Presents: Get Soca 2019 debuts at number one this week on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart.
Released on February 22 by Fox Fuse, it sold 156 copies in its opening week. Get Soca 2019 contains 21 songs including Mr Killa’s Run With It, which won the 2019 International Soca Monarch (Power) competition last Friday during Trinidad Carnival.
Mr Killa (given name Hollis Mapp) is from Grenada. He rose to fame a few years ago with the hit song, Rollie Pollie.
Other artistes featured on the album are Patrice Roberts, Voice, Erphaan Alves, Nadia Batson, Blaxx, Farmer Nappy, Nailah Blackman, Aaron Duncan, Shal Marshall, Kes, Problem Child and Machel Montano.
Rock-reggae band Of Good Nature enters the chart at number three with Timeless, an 11-track set which was released February 22 via Good Nature/Ineffable Records. This is the third album from the Charlotte, North Carolina, quintet which formed in 2011.
Another multiple song soca album, Soca Universe 2019 Vol 1, from Trinidad’s Monk Music (a label owned by Machel Montano), is number nine. It features the hits Famalay by Skinny Fabulous, Machel and Bunji Garlin, The Road by Ashanti and Machel, Rag Storm by Super Blue, So Good by Ding Dong and Machel, Close to Me by Kes and Shenseea, and Not One Thing by Patrice Roberts.
Last week’s number one, Summer to Winter, by Kolohe Kai slips to number two. Sting and Shaggy’s Grammy-winning 44/876 is number four.
Free Rein by Rebelution rises from number 10 to five, with Machel’s G.O.A.T.steady at number six.
Falling from number five to seven is Everyday Life, Everyday People by Slightly Stoopid. Landon McNamara’s Still Kickin’, which was number one three weeks ago, falls to number eight.
The self-titled album from Iration, which peaked at number two nine months ago, is number 10.
