Romain Virgo’s ‘Scary Movie’

Tommy Lee Sparta faced the brunt of public criticism when he released his ‘demonic’ songs, and now singer Romain Virgo has come under immense scrutiny with the release of his latest video, ‘Scary Movie’.

The video, which premiered earlier this week, has left many persons questioning whether Virgo has gone the gothic route.

The video showcases Michael Jackson Thriller-like images. Since its release, there have been mixed reactions.

While some fans took to Twitter to state that they loved the video and its concept, even more posted messages describing the video as ‘demonic’, ‘devilish’ and ‘disturbing’.

Virgo said that the video has an underlying message.

“The video is all about the two undeniable forces we face in life, which are good and evil. It nuh make sense we live in denial that only good exists. We have to show the bad and keep reminding the world that good will always overcome evil. For those who complain about the images, they have misunderstood the words of the song and the message of the video.”

He added that artistes should be mindful of the messages that they put out.

“Coming from a Christian home and growing with certain values, what I am seeing in today’s society, it seems as if we are lost, and I have to stand up for what I know is right and be true to myself. We have a responsibility as artistes to be mindful of the material we put out, because the children are the first to sing along, so what does that tell you?”

Virgo’s manager, Shane Brown, also defended the concept of the video.

“Firstly, before we start to criticise, let us compliment the creative efforts put into this video. If one took the time out to watch the video in its entirety, the message would not have passed them. The message will be even more clear with the release of Virgo’s new video Jah Over All Things, which is a continuation of this video.”

The video for Jah Over All Things will be released in the next two weeks. In the meantime, however, fans of the artiste can see him in action on International Night 2 at Reggae Sumfest.
