THE last call for alcohol will come a little earlier now in Guyana.
Authorities say they are enforcing a previously ignored law that requires bars and other businesses where people gather to drink to close at 2 a.m.
Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan said yesterday he hopes this will help reduce violent crime, alcohol abuse and traffic accidents.
He said the government will keep enforcing that law despite heavy public criticism.
Businesses could see their operating permits suspended or revoked if they fail to comply.
The move comes as a new administration takes shape under President David Granger.
He is a retired army general who took office in May and ended 23 years in power by the People’s Progressive Party.
